Wireless Wednesday Exclusive: Darcy from 'Cakes by Darcy'

Love Atlanta small business success stories.

Darcy Lynn has been designing and decorating cakes since 1987, where she began working in the bakery department at Hy-Vee food store in Marshalltown, Iowa. She then honed her craft at two Chicago landmark bakeries, Bennison’s Bakery and Tag’s Bakery, learning the art of wedding cake structure and design, figure piping, intricate piping and forming buttercream flowers on a skewer.

Darcy eventually relocated to the Atlanta area in 1997, and began working for Rhodes Bakery, which is an iconic Atlanta family-owned business, as they were opening a new location in Roswell, Ga.

Have a listen:

After having two children and contemplating when would be a good time to open her own business, she finally decided that the time was now! In 2004, Darcy opened Cakes by Darcy, and at the ages of four and seven, her children Michael and Andrea helped their mom with everything from cosmetic renovations to the ongoing success of the family business! Andrea began working in the cake shop during her high school years and after graduating from Kennesaw State University with a BFA, she continues to be one of the business’ biggest assets!

In 2021, after 17 years in retail space, Darcy moved the business into her home, operating as a fully licensed and inspected Georgia Cottage Kitchen, focusing on primarily wedding cakes, and business is better than ever! Darcy spends much of her free time researching and studying new techniques, including wafer paper floral making, rice paper design elements and new buttercream textures.
