T-Mobile announces ScamShield, merger date of August 2

Lots of T-Mobile news to wrap up the week.

On Thursday, in a webcast T-Mobile CEO Mike Sievert unveiled Scam Shield, the company’s latest "n-carrier move." Scam Shield takes aim at something affecting everyone – scam and robocalls — with an unparalleled series of solutions. And it is arriving just as people need it most. Scam and robocalls were always a nuisance but the problem has only gotten more severe during the coronavirus pandemic as scammers prey on people’s financial and health concerns.

Scam Shield is T-Mobile’s first Un-carrier move since merging with Sprint and includes new, free protections for T-Mobile, Metro by T-Mobile and Sprint customers. Scam Shield attacks this complex problem from all angles with free safeguards designed to:

Stop scammers in their tracks with free scam identification and blocking for every customer. Give you more information about who’s calling with free, enhanced Caller ID. Protect your personal information with a free second number to keep your personal number personal, free number change if needed and free ID monitoring.

While AT&T and Verizon make millions charging their customers to protect them from the scam calls their very networks deliver, T-Mobile is challenging the Carriers to be better. “Today, I’m challenging the Carriers to get off their assets, stop profiting from fear and do the right thing, because everyone needs and deserves protection now, more than ever,” said Sievert.

Scam Shield comes even as new third-party research finds that T-Mobile is already 30% better at identifying Scam Calls than other providers.

Features:

Free Scam ID and Blocking. Suspicious calls are flagged, and customers can turn on scam blocking to never see those calls again.

Free, Enhanced Caller ID. If we know who’s calling, you’ll know who is calling. And with new improvements, you’ll know when the number is verified as coming from a real person or business.

Free Second Number. Introducing T-Mobile PROXY, a second number to keep your personal number personal.

Free Number Change. If your personal number becomes a spam magnet, get a clean slate with a new number.

Free Scam Shield App. The central spot to activate these new protections and, for an extra charge, unlock more advanced call controls. Sprint customers now get free protections — previously an added charge — in the upgraded Call Screener app.

Free Be ID Aware Service. Get ID monitoring and alerts for 12 months from the experts at McAfee, available for a limited time.

Not just in other news... T-Mobile also announced a major merger milestone coming on August 2. On that day, the company combines its operations with Sprint and unifies under the T-Mobile brand in retail nationwide with new plans to bring even more competition to wireless than ever before.

This is exciting news across the wireless universe.

“Now that Sprint is a part of T-Mobile, we can take on even bigger problems, so today, we’re taking on one of the biggest pain points in wireless — scams and unwanted robocalls,” said Mike Sievert, CEO at T-Mobile.

“Scam Shield has never been more needed than it is right now. Scammers see COVID-19 as an opportunity to take advantage of Americans at their most vulnerable. When we saw that happening, we knew we had to take bold, swift action. With Scam Shield, T-Mobile customers get fewer scam calls, period … and it’s all because of our advanced network.”

Scam Shield launches July 24. T-Mobile and Metro customers can activate scam blocking by dialing #662# on their phone right now.

All good news! T-Mobile is the first to deliver its industry-leading Scam ID & Scam Block to EVERY customer, regardless of brand, plan or device, for free. We’re also the first major wireless provider to give customers free Caller ID.
